Getting around in Atlanta, GA

Although, there are many ways to get around on Atlanta, the main mode of transportation is the car, due to the comprehensive network of freeways that radiate out from the city.

The main highways in Atlanta are Interstates 20, 75 and 85, other major roadways in its area, also including: I-575, Georgia 400, Georgia 141, I-675, Georgia 316, I-985, Stone Mountain Freeway (US 78), and Langford Parkway (SR 166), which all terminate just within or beyond the Perimeter, with the exception of Langford Parkway, limiting the transportation options in the central city.

The city is served by MARTA and Greyhound, as well as by Amtrak, with the Crescent train running daily, serving New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans, and vice-versa. Atlanta's Amtrak station is located at 1688 Peachtree St. N.W., several miles north of the airport and downtown.

Walking is also a reasonable way to get around in Atlanta, however, only in some areas: Midtown, Downtown, Decatur and Virginia-Highland - outside these areas, the car remains your best bet.

From Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport: Head west on S Terminal Parkway and make a slight right toward Airport Blvd/Terminal Return. Continue straight onto Airport Blvd/Terminal Return and take the ramp to I-85 N. Keep left at the fork to continue toward I-85 N, follow the signs for I-75 N/I-20/I-85 N/Atlanta and merge onto I-85 N. Merge onto I-75 N and take exit 247 to merge onto I-20 W toward Birmingham. Take exit 55B, toward Lee St/Atl Univ Center/Ft McPherson, and merge onto Park St SW. Turn right at Lee St SW and make a slight left at Westview Dr SW. Turn right. Spelman College will be on the left.
